Morning Sickness...

I've been dealing with ALL day morning sickness. I wake up with it and go to bed with it. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might help calm it down some?

Zofran. It is generic now so reasonably priced.

Babies R Us carries "prego pops" for morning sickness. You could probably find them somewhere online as well if that's easier. Sometimes just sucking on a mint helped me as well. Good Luck!

P.S. Check out the website babycenter.com. You can sign up for emails every week on the growth of your baby. Lots of info on that site too.

Zofran didn't really help me that much. I still felt sick, but the medication kept me from actually throwing up. It also gave me horrible headaches, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you actually get to the point where you can't keep any food or liquid down. If you have regular morning sickness, I would suggest ginger supplements, preggie pops, vitamin B6, or peppermint tea. But, if you do get to the point where the sickness is causing you to lose a lot of weight or get dehydrated, ask your dr about the different medications that can help. With my first pregnancy I took phenergan which helped a lot, but made me drowsy, so I couldn't use it with my second one. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy. I was sick for the first 6 months of mine and I really hope that does not happen to you. When the sickness first started I found that Sea Bands and Bonine helped me a great deal. Bonine is an over the counter motion sickness medicine that is safe during pregnancy. Benadryl can also be very helpful if it doesn't make you too sleepy and it is safe as well. Best of luck to you and I hope you get to feeling better.

I wish i did. I tried everything including a TENS unit on my wrist.

The only thing that kept me somewhat stable was continually eating oyster crackers. Having something in my stomach at all times at least took the edge off.

Avoid the drugs if you possibly can. A lot of people swear by seabands, which are little bracelets that push down on an acupunture spot. Ginger can also be very helpful. Water can actually make you feel MORE nauseous, so ginger tea can be very beneficial. If you feel you are in danger of getting dehydrated contact your midwife or doctor. And remember that the sickness means your hormones are changing and your baby is sticking! (FWIW, I'm a doula, not a doctor, and remember to run anything past your doctor or midwife.)

If it isn't bad enough for a prescription then you might try taking extra B6 (1/2 tablet in the morning and 1/2 in the evening). Ginger also helps. You can take the pills or eat ginger snaps, sip ginger ale, etc.(walmart's brand seems to have the most ginger) I am expecting my 5th in August and every pregnancy has been different, as to the severity, what helped and what I could eat. I do find that getting overly tired makes it worse. So try napping, too.
Congratulations on your precious blessing! Take care and take comfort that the morning sickness means Mommy's body is producing lot of healthy hormones to make baby grow! ;)

Hi Kristina!
Congrats on the baby! What helped me when I had morning sickness was ginger ale...LOTS of ginger ale. I'd keep a can of it and some crackers by my bed, and the very first thing I'd do when i woke up would be to have a can of the ginger ale and some crackers, so my stomach automatically had something to work with.

hope that helps!! Happiness & health to you and baby!!

I also had all day nasuea when pregnant with my son, so I feel your pain. You can take 25mg of B6 up to 6 times per day. This helped me a lot. I also found that if I drank ginger tea, made with fresh ginger, it helped considerably. I would put five or six thinly sliced and peeled rounds of fresh ginger in a huge mug and keep topping it up with hot water and drink it all day long. As long as I was sipping consitently, my nausea was managable.

On the bright side, nausea is usually a sign of a healthy pregnancy as it is your body's response to increasing hormones, so I took it as a good sign that my baby was healthy and growing.

Eat small meals throughout the day. Also, the huge amount of iron in prenatal vitamins makes a lot of women sick. Try taking a regular multivitamin and extra folate and iron on their own later in the day. Also, keep a pack of Saltines & a glass of water by your bed. Eat a couple and wait a few minutes before getting up. These are what helped me get through the all-day sickness.

I JUST passed this part of my pregnancy so I'll tell you what I did:

Preggie pops/Preggie pop drops- These are just sour hard candies that are made with natural fruit flavorings. Apparently the sour flavor is what helps you feel better. I'd have 1 or 2 if I was feeling particularly bad but I'm not sure how well they helped. Now, I'll take one if I feel hungry or if my blood sugar seems low and it seems to work well for that. You could probably get some sour lemon drops that would work about the same.

Smoothies- I LOVE the chocolate banana smoothies from starbucks but thats obviously expensive for everyday. I found a recipe online and have tweaked it a little bit. My husband actually wakes up before I do so every morning he makes both of us a smoothie before he goes to work and puts mine in the fridge for when I get up. Even if I don't drink it right away and the ice melts, it still has the same flavor just not as thick. The banana, sugar, and whey protein seemed to really help me feel a bit better.

Gingersnaps- I remember being out of town one day. We were stopping to eat because I was crashing/getting sick FAST but we still had to wait for our food to be ready. I went to the bathroom and remembered I had some gingersnaps so I ate like 5 cookies right in the bathroom... gross but you do what you have to do! I felt instantly better! Anything with natural ginger (gingerale has no real ginger) is supposed to ease the queasiness.

Food cravings- don't worry about eating super healthy or whatever. Just eat what SOUNDS good. The few times I strayed from my cravings are when I became the most sick. If you take a bite and just aren't feeling it, PUT THE FORK DOWN. Your body is sending this message for a reason. I didn't eat the healthiest for a week or two but it was better than the option of eating and it allll coming right back up. Baby will take the nurtrients it needs so if anyone suffers nutritionally, it'll just be you temporarily:-)

Snack all day- DH has really stepped up and become a doting husband and soon-to-be father. He makes me a lunchkit cooler of snacks if we are going somewhere. Fruit, pretzels, juice, cheese. Your blood sugar is becoming really low, you are becoming anemic, and you need more potassium so try to eat snacks that will help those things.

Club soda- I had constant heartburn/indigestion/gas/stomach pain along with the nausea. The carbonated water really helped to relieve some of that. Its gross but I have a hard time burping. the carbonation helped me out with that so help relieve some of the pressure. You can add some orange juice for a nice fruity drink or just a little lemon for flavor.

Prenatal vitamins- Sometimes these can actually make a woman feel worse! You can try experimenting with different brands to see if one works better for you. I'd skip one occasionally and would typically feel much better. Its not ideal but I think back to the times before prenatal vitamins and how many billions of babies have been just fine without them. I think its the iron in it that can increase the morning sickness.

My morning sickness was about weeks 7-10 or so so thats only 3 or 4 weeks of feeling awful. I hope yours ends soon and that you try some of my suggestions!

What helped me was plain crackers (like saltines but without the salt) and whole milk. Before you even try to get out of bed in the morning, sit up against the pillows, eat a few crackers and sip the milk. Then rest a few minutes, continuing to sit up against the pillows and see if the nausea calms down. If it works for you, it's a lot better than most drugs.

I found ginger ale and some moderate physical activity (taking a nice walk) helped me a lot, as did the sour, hard candies. Try to stay hydrated, and sometimes keeping a little something on your stomach helps. Don't focus too hard on eating "right" at the moment, eat whatever sounds good (it was gummi bears for me once!) and take some folic acid supplements. I've heard B6 helps, but I never tried it.

Ginger is great for morning sickness. Ginger snaps, ginger ale, ginger spice on foods, ginger sauce, they are all good.

Also, try to keep a LITTLE bit on your tummy, especially in the morning, or when it seems to consistantly be worse. Just a few crackers can often help keep you from getting MS.

You can get these little sucking candies that are at many maternity stores and Babies R Us. The sucker form is called Preggie Pops, not sure what the hard candy form is called, but they will be with the Preggie Pops.

If you know what your blood type is, find the book
"Eat Right for (4) your Type". The purpose of this is to find out which type of protein is best for you. Your body needs alot of protein. Mercola.com will have lots of info on good protein shakes. Morning sickness is a sign of nutritional deficiencies. If your prenatal vitamins smell awful to you (smell them every time BEFORE you take them), then don't take them! I will check back - if you want to "talk" privately, let me know an appropriate email address.
Be blessed! (know you are blessed)

The positive thing about morning sickness is that most women only get it through the first trimester, so while it is awful it is also (almost always) temporary.

Ditto on the ginger suggestion. Peppermint and cinnamon are also helpful at relieving nausea. You can also try nibbling a few saltines before getting out of bed in the morning-sometimes this is helpful at staving off that horrible pukey feeling. Don't ask me how it works, but for some it does. ;)

I also recommend the ginger, including ginger-ale. I've also had luck with sucking on lemon flavored candy drops. Also, try eating five small meals during the day instead of the normal big three. Also make sure to stay well hydrated, your readers don't want to hear about anymore ER visits! As others have said, check any drugs out with the medical practitioner of your choice. Isn't 'morning sickness' a misnomer? It's more like 'all day sickness.' But it's a silver-lining that the baby is just growing along and you have the illness to prove it!
