A Future Post...Hopefully!
I don't have the time to do so right now, but I hope to one day soon do a post on Michael and Debi Pearl. I have had several ask me if I agree with them and their child training methods and so on. I have never studies up or read any of their child training books, but I have read one book written by Debi Pearl - Created To Be His Help Meet. While the book did have some good advice, I had to eat the meat and spit out the bones so to speak. There were several things that I either disagreed with or it hit me wrong. So, hopefully within the next couple of weeks I will have the time to answer some of your questions!
Take care of yourself first and don't worry about the Pearls book. You have more important things to deal with.
ReplyDeleteBlessings.
Ooh! I'll be looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteHeh I feel like I had to chew out bunches of bones just to find a little meat hidden in a few places. Wasn't worth it, and I read the book twice!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, their books and articles are a "eat the meat, spit out the bones" kind of thing. They do teach some good principles, but I don't really like Mike Pearl's attitude in a lot of his writings (I haven't read Debi Pearl's book, but she does seem nicer in her articles). I think there are a lot of other resources out there on both marriage and child-raising that are good enough that we don't need the Pearls' stuff. Of course, the Bible is the best resource for both marriage and child-raising anyway. :D
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time sifting through "Helpmeet" as well. I think I just felt like the concept of grace was missing. I agree with the above comments that there are so many other better sources for ideas on godly marriage. I haven't read the Pearl's parenting book, but I feel like I probably should, just to know what they're teaching.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if your husband is a willing reader, but my marriage has been really blessed through reading and discussing books with my husband. My husband isn't really interested in reading any "pink" book about a woman's role in marriage, but when I read an interesting chapter in any marriage book (or actually any book, for that matter), I ask him to read it over and we talk about it. It's that conversation that brings us closer together. Amazingly, he's reciprocated and given me several of the books/chapters that he wants to hear my thoughts on. :)
We've done the same with a few parenting books. It is so fascinating to learn my husband's perspective- I'm continuously learning all sorts of things about how his mind works- and we've already been married for 7 years! :)
Hey Kristina!
ReplyDeleteI LOOOOVVEEE the Pearls and Created to be His Helpmeet (I have read it over six times!) I have also read their child training literature: To Train Up a Child, and the No Greater Joy volumes, plus other books and their newsletters. I really enjoy reading their material. To me it is just practical and biblical & I love their personalities.
No one is a perfect parent or spouse; but from what I have learned, they have had 5 children that all turned out well and they are still madly in love with each other, and I like to get advice from those who seem to have done something right!
I'm not married and I don't have children, but I think that it is never too early to prepare! :) Mrs. Pearl has written another book titled "Preparing to be a Helpmeet" Cant wait to get my hands on it. I loved Created! Cant you tell?!
Anyways, this is a long comment....I will be sure to come over and see what you discovered in your studies! (and more baby bump pictures!! :)
